1. The Location of the Vineyards: Ramnous

Discover the Historic Charm of Ramnous and Marathon:

The area of Marathon is not only synonymous with the legendary long-distance race, but also hosts one of the most unique vineyards in the world. This vineyard is located in the highly protected archaeological site of Ramnous, an ancient site that adds a layer of historical richness to the vines that thrive there. Rhamnous was an important demos (district) of ancient Athens, home to the sanctuary of the goddess Nemesis, the local goddess of agriculture.  Zeginis family, with roots deeply rooted in the local soil, cultivates this vineyard, continuing a legacy that extends from generation to generation. Imagine walking among rows of vines, while ancient relics whisper stories of the past.

The history of Marathon is full of legends. The Battle of Marathon took place here in 490 BC, a pivotal moment in Greek history when the Athenians defeated the Persian invaders. This victory was celebrated by the runner, Pheidippides, who ran from Marathon to Athens to carry the news, inspiring the modern marathon route.

The Marathon vineyard is a proud part of Athens' peri-urban vineyard, contributing to the rich winemaking tradition of Attica. Attica, with its legendary connection to ancient Athens, has been an important wine-producing region for centuries.

Surrounded by the natural beauty of the National Park of Schinias, classified as a NATURA 2000 area, the only one located so close to an urban center and the picturesque lake of Marathon, with a magnificent dam on the river Haradros.

Our vineyards are not only a testimony of ancient traditions but also a haven of natural splendour. Come and explore a place where every vine is rooted in centuries-old traditions and every sip of wine is a journey through time and nature.

2. The terroir & the climat

The unique terroir and climat of Zeginis' Winery vineyards

Our vineyards are blessed with a terroir that is as rich and diverse as the history that surrounds them. The fertile soils of Ramnous, predominantly argilo-calcaire—a unique blend of clay and limestone—offer several benefits for viticulture. This soil composition ensures excellent water retention and drainage, providing optimal conditions for grapevine growth. Coupled with the mild Mediterranean climate, these conditions create the perfect environment for cultivating exceptional grapes. The proximity to the sea brings gentle breezes that temper the summer heat, ensuring a balanced growth cycle for our vines. This unique combination of soil, climate, and historic location infuses our wines with distinctive flavors and aromas that reflect the essence of this extraordinary place. At Zeginis Winery, our terroir is not just a piece of land; it's the soul of our wine.
